Congratulations to Foo Fighters on being nominated for six Grammy's this year.  Pretty good for an album recorded in a garage.  Here are the categories:

ALBUM OF THE YEAR – WASTING LIGHT.  Competing against Adele and Lady Gaga, I'm not sure how good of a shot they've got at this one.

BEST ROCK PERFORMANCE – “WALK”.  "Performance" means "song" and they are competing against Coldplay, Mumford & Sons, the Decemberists and Radio Head, there is stiff competition, but not a bad chance.

BEST HARD ROCK PERFORMANCE – “WHITE LIMO”.  Others in this category are Mastedon, Megadeth, Sum 41 and Dream Theater.  White Limo is a great, hard rock song and I think the Foo's have a good chance at this although I'm not sure they really should win.  Yes they should.  It's Hard Rock, not Heavy Metal.

BEST ROCK SONG – “WALK”.  Not sure why this is different than Best Rock Performance.  I must admit I don't understand these categories.

BEST ROCK ALBUM – WASTING LIGHT. Others nominated here are Red Hot Chili Peppers, Kings of Leon, Wilco and Jeff Beck.

BEST LONG FORM MUSIC VIDEO – FOO FIGHTERS: BACK & FORTH

So anyway, Dave Grohl beat me and got nominated for a bunch of Grammy's.  Good for him.

Okay, when you find yourself talking to a reporter in front of a camera about someone and his secret project, and this someone happens to be a rather famous guy that people will probably be very interested in and said famous guy has not as of yet made any sort of announcement about anything whatsoever concerning said secret project, you might just want to just shut up.  Like right now.  Zip your lips.  Stop talking.  Quite simple really.  In the grand scheme of things.  (Editor's note: In his head, the author is sounding just like Ricky Gervais in those last two sentences).   See the video at 1:26 to see what I mean.

Unless.

Said famous guy has secretly told you to discreetly leak his said secret project to create extra media hype and public interest...

Of course!!!  Why didn't I think of that sooner?  Crafty devil, that Dave Grohl.  It took awhile for this cynical mind to arrive at the obvious conclusion, but now that I know the impossible-to-prove truth, it does nothing to distract me from the fact that Dave Grohl is working on becoming a filmmaker of all things.  As if he hasn't done enough already, being a rock star, rock n' roll hall of fame shoe-in, collaborator to everyone (and I do mean literally everyone), founder of supergroup that's super cool and not lame like every other supergroup and...shall I go on?  No, I will stop there.

And zip. My.  Lips.

But why does he have to keep doing other cool things?  (Editor note: author has turned very whiny).  He keeps doing things that I'd...kind of...like...to do.  In my warm, fuzzy, secret heart.

I hate Dave Grohl.

If you are a Foo Fighters fan and a Pink Floyd fan, then this video will send you into Pink Foo heaven.  There is so much Dave Grohl in the news lately, that this is starting to be hard work!  And I was just starting to think maybe I didn't hate Dave Grohl so much any more.

So if you don't have access to SiriusXM Satellite Radio to hear the full interview, I found this two minute clip.  It was a  pretty cool interview and sounds like it would've been fun to hear the entire thing.  Some highlights from the Spin article:

According to Newsday, Vig said the incomplete "Song in D" came from the Nevermind recording sessions but never received lyrics. To which Grohl reportedly quipped, "Sounds like another box set!"

Grohl and Novoselic also recalled how Nevermind felt like a dream come true. "It didn't really seem like this would happen. It was almost like a scam." That might explain the band's frugal living conditions during the recording: Nirvana's members split a room in a $70-a-night hotel. Then again, rappers Kid 'n Play were fellow residents of the Oakwood Corporate Apartments, where Grohl apparently met them at the free breakfast buffet; also among the hotel's denizens were
"The Final Countdown" rockers Europe.

The interview was held in a "town hall" style, where the live studio audience and callers at home could ask questions. Other topics discussed, according to Newsday, included the use of a click track (at Vig's request, Grohl used a metronome for his drumming on "Lithium" and "Something in the Way"), alternate producer choices (along with Vig, candidates included Neil Young producer David Briggs and R.E.M./Smithereens producer Don Dixon), and, of course, Kurt Cobain's absence. "I wish Kurt was here," Novoselic said. "There's a big hole here."

The world premiere of the Foo Fighter's first single, "Rope",  off their new album occurred yesterday at 7AM EST.  It's a bold choice for a first single; odd time signatures, breathy vocals in the verses, big catchy chorus, plus the sickest guitar solo on a Foo Fighters album yet.  Bravo, Mr. Grohl and Company, bravo.  Here's the link:

In my efforts to Beat Dave Grohl, I hereby release the first "single" off of our new album too.  Okay, it was already released on an EP, but it will be on the new album and you can hear it below.

It also is a bold choice for a first single I would like to point out.  I know, most people wouldn't choose a slow tempo, slightly depressing song inspired by the sad state of Michigan's economy as the first single to their mostly uptempo country punk album, but Brother Howe is not most people.  Nor are we most people's favorite band for that matter (editors note: there might be a connection there).

And so dear readers, without further ado, I present to you the first single off our forthcoming album:

Hard To Find

ps - I dedicate this song to Jeff Daniels, who's love of our home state inspired my brother to write an award nominated screenplay, which then inspired me to write this song.  I also would like to take this opportunity to apologize to Mr. Daniels for trying to pitch him on said screenplay on February 5th of this year.

The Foo Fighters announced yesterday that the name of their new album is...Wasting Light.

What a minute...

What is Dave Grohl trying to say to me here?  That I'm wasting my LIFE?  Doesn't he think I already know that I'm toiling my life away while he gets to live the dream version of it?  Does he have to go ahead and rub my nose in it by naming his entire album after me?  Well, I will have you know, Mr. Dave Grohl, that I am not wasting my life no matter what you say.  I guess we all realize that the hate goes two ways, though now doesn't it?

But why do I somehow, deep inside, also feel slightly honored?  And at the same time, because  of that, deeply ashamed?

Oh wait, the name of the album is Wasting Light?  What does that mean?

Aaaah, I hate Dave Grohl.

Here's a repost of the press release from Gibson.com:

Foo Fighters have named their new album. The band’s seventh studio record will be titled Wasting Light and will be available on April 12. The lead single for the new effort by Dave Grohl and company will be “Rope.” Producer Butch Vig helmed the sessions for the album, which was recorded in Grohl’s garage. The album features a mini-Nirvana reunion. Nirvana bassist Krist Novoselic guests on Wasting Light, which, of course, features former Nirvana drummer Grohl and Nevermind producer Vig.

The Foos recently released a video for album track “White Limo.”

Wasting Light tracklisting:

1. “Bridge Burning”
2. “Rope”
3. “Dear Rosemary”
4. “White Limo”
5. “Arlandria”
6. “These Days”
7. “Back & Forth”
8. “A Matter of Time”
9. “Miss the Misery”
10. “I Should Have Known”
11. “Walk”

Foo Fighters have gone and done it again, making a funny video for one of their new songs.  Interestingly enough, the first single is supposed to be a song called "Rope."  So I'm guessing that this was a quick, fun video they did for a song that probably won't be a big radio hit.  Kind of a throw out to the fans of their really hard, fast stuff.  The video is a throwback too, reminding me of watching the early days of MTV and the cheesy videos that were around.  In fact, it looks like they literally recorded this video with a camcorder direct to VHS.

Check it out here, then continue reading below.

I went around town once with a camcorder and my daughter's help  and recorded a video too.  It's not funny.  It's not a throwback.  I don't have a limo.  I have a Ford Focus.  I stink...

I hate Dave Grohl.

Warning to my kids: this video would be rated R for language if the MPAA had anything to do with it.  Therefore, since we don't let you watch R rated movies at home, let's not watch R rated videos daddy posts on his website, okay?  We like Dave Grohl as a person, but we don't want to talk like him.

Okay, now that we've got that little bit of hypocrisy out of the way, let's get to it.  If you're at all interested in the behind-the-scenes stuff of Dave Grohl recording the new Foo Fighter's album, check this video out.  He gives a tour of his garage where they recorded the album (and sure enough it is a real garage - I especially like the pink little girls bike along the same wall rows of microphone and instrument cables are hung on) and talks about recording demos there and how they recorded using analog tape and how he didn't want to lose the "garagy" sound that he liked so much.  Oh, and he shows the "Foo Fighters Guitar" he's used on all the FF albums.

All in all, Dave Grohl's garage sounds like a cool place to record an album.  My garage is freezing cold and has dirty slush all over the floor.

I hate Dave Grohl.

Well, if you've always wanted to direct a Foo Fighters video here's your chance.  The Foo Fighters (and Dave Grohl) are once again trying to convince the world how cool they are by giving the opportunity to direct their new video to a fan.  Apparently there will be 11 winners (one for each song on the album?).

Notice that even a throw away song they came up with for a contest video is still catchy as all get out.  I hate that so much.

To listen to approximately 30 seconds of the new album opening track, "Bridge Burning" click on the link above.  Be prepared to hate it for it's awesomeness.
