Dave Grohl turns down Paul McCartney 01/20/2010
So here’s the big news today. Apparently Dave Grohl had to turn down Paul McCartney, after Sir Paul asked to play bass in his new band. What the what?! That’s right; Paul McCartney came out with this little tidbit yesterday. There’s a couple of interesting things to me about this. First, I knew Dave Grohl was pretty big at a certain level (by certain level I mean I saw the Foo Fighters play the 4500 seat capacity Delta Plex in Grand Rapids a few years ago and it was a little over half full). But when a Beatle is asking you for permission to play in your band and you say NO, well…I don’t even know what to say about that. That is, well, that's something. Second, this also points out that Them Crooked Vultures is Dave Grohl’s band. It’s not John Paul Jones’ band. It’s not Josh Hommes’ band (that probably goes without saying). No, it’s Dave’s project. Oh yeah. It also reminds me of an interview I read when the album came out with all three of TCV. In it, I think it was Dave Grohl who said something like, “Well we wanted the best bass player in the world for our band.” And then Josh Homme chimed in, “But he wasn’t available so we asked John Paul Jones.” Hmm… I hate Dave Grohl.
