Here’s a phone interview with Dave Grohl on the eve of Them Crooked Vulture's Australian tour. He explains the origins of the new super group, which had its beginnings at Dave’s 40th birthday party at Medieval Times (I’m sure there’s some sort of joke in there). He also talks about how he ended up playing on Slash’s new album that’s coming out.
Apparently Slash and Duff from Guns ‘n Roses sort of live in the same neighborhood and Slash’s kids go the same school as Dave’s so they ended up jamming at a school fund raiser. How crazy would that be? I’m picturing a school gym with fluorescent lights and a small stage. Hey, I’ve done that! Maybe our lives aren’t so different after all. Except I didn’t play with Slash. Or Dave. However, he says something that I totally agree with. The interviewer remarks about how Dave is living the dream. And Dave agrees and says he has gotten to play with some really famous people and musicians he’s admired (although he admits to hating Guns ‘n Roses back in the day) and that with some of the really big idols he’s played with, it can be nerve wracking. But he said the true reward is the excitement while you’re doing it, no matter who you’re doing it with, whether it’s Bono or your next door neighbor. And that’s something my wife and I talk about a lot. About how living the dream isn’t necessarily doing the famous things on TV. For example, WE GET TO PLAY IN A ROCK BAND! It’s not televised and it’s not in front of tens of thousands of people or even a thousand people for that matter. But, hey, people come out to see us play and we play loud, fast rock ‘n roll and have a blast. People cheer and it’s fun. We are living the dream in our own way. But you know what?
I still hate Dave Grohl.
