I’m tired of Dave Grohl always winning. It’s time someone beat Dave at something.  It’s time someone even beat him at his own game.  And I guess it’s up to me.  So here’s what I’m going to do.  Dave and the Foo Fighters are recording their new album right now.  It is now my goal, my number one aim in life, to record and release an album before the new Foo Fighters album comes out.  I’ve had an album in the works for awhile now, but it’s not even half done.

I’ve got a lot of work to do.  Dave and the gang are working day and night, with all the time in the world to devote to this.  It’s Dave’s job and it’s the number two reason why I hate Date Grohl.  I, however, have a “real” job, a family and other commitments.  I’ve got 15 minutes a day to devote to this.  Okay that’s an exaggeration.  Not much of an exaggeration, but an exaggeration nonetheless.  But I think I can still pull this off and here’s why.  For a band of the Foo Fighters stature, coming out with an album is an event.  They don’t just go in and record.  Oh no.  They actually pre-record the album first.  Make demos, work out the arrangements and all that stuff.  A lot of pre-production they call it.  Then when they do record, they get everything perfect.  They may spend a couple of days getting the drums set up and all the drum heads tuned and the microphones placed in the exact right spot to get the best sound possible.  Then they do the same thing for the guitars when it’s time to record those.  And when they finally get around to pressing the “record” button they make sure they get everything perfect.  Every minor mistake is either re-recorded or edited.  All this takes a lot of time.

Some bands are pretty efficient in the studio.  The White Stripes can be done with an album in a week or two.  Of course there are only two of them in the band and they have a different philosophy when it comes to recording music (it doesn’t have to be perfect).  My belief is that the Foo Fighters are fairly efficient too.  They’re not going to spend months or the better part of a year in the studio like some bands.  Dave recorded the first Foo album all by himself in an extremely short amount of time.  What I mean by that is that he would record entire songs within an hour!  Drums, bass , guitar, vocals.  Everything.  I read that when he would start recording the guitar parts he would still be shaking from playing the drums.

But regardless of how quickly they record (from what I can tell they are still recording – lots of great tweets over at FooFighters.com), there’s still a lot of post-production work required (mixing, mastering, album art, photo shoots, not to mention the giant publicity machine that needs to get fired up and coordinated with a tour and all that).

So my hope is our little country punk band can move fast and get things done quite a bit more quickly.  We’ll see.

Dave Grohl, it’s about time I beat you at something.
