Dave Groh, Chris Novoselic and Butch Vig Interview with Jon Stewart on XM Satellite Radio 09/27/2011
So if you don't have access to SiriusXM Satellite Radio to hear the full interview, I found this two minute clip. It was a pretty cool interview and sounds like it would've been fun to hear the entire thing. Some highlights from the Spin article: According to Newsday, Vig said the incomplete "Song in D" came from the Nevermind recording sessions but never received lyrics. To which Grohl reportedly quipped, "Sounds like another box set!" Grohl and Novoselic also recalled how Nevermind felt like a dream come true. "It didn't really seem like this would happen. It was almost like a scam." That might explain the band's frugal living conditions during the recording: Nirvana's members split a room in a $70-a-night hotel. Then again, rappers Kid 'n Play were fellow residents of the Oakwood Corporate Apartments, where Grohl apparently met them at the free breakfast buffet; also among the hotel's denizens were "The Final Countdown" rockers Europe. The interview was held in a "town hall" style, where the live studio audience and callers at home could ask questions. Other topics discussed, according to Newsday, included the use of a click track (at Vig's request, Grohl used a metronome for his drumming on "Lithium" and "Something in the Way"), alternate producer choices (along with Vig, candidates included Neil Young producer David Briggs and R.E.M./Smithereens producer Don Dixon), and, of course, Kurt Cobain's absence. "I wish Kurt was here," Novoselic said. "There's a big hole here." There is a new song out by a group called The Wavves and it is called "I Wanna Meet Dave Grohl." Um, yeah, who doesn't? You know what will probably happen? Because he is so cool and the nicest guy in Rock and all that, Dave Grohl will get wind of this somehow and he will go out of his way to meet the guy who wrote this song and they will have a nice photo-op and smile and hug. This is my prediction. I wonder what would happen if he ever got wind of my song "I Hate Dave Grohl?" Would he go out of his way for me? He probably would actually. He'd come over to my house and punch me in the face. Or ignore me completely. Probably the latter. To be ignored or to be punched in the face? That is the question. Hmm...I think I'd rather be punched in the face. But then I think about how hard he hits the drums and I wonder if that's such a good idea. I think I'll risk it. Hey Dave, if you ever read this, I am officially inviting you to come to my house and punch me in the face. Then we can have a nice photo-op and smile and hug. Oh yeah, here's the song if you'd like to hear it. It's cool. And here is my song, I Hate Dave Grohl. Go here to download a copy for yourself. Foo Fighters video for Walk won for Best Rock Video at MTV"s Video Music Awards last night. I knew it was a good idea... They won out over the Black Keys, Mumford & Sons, Foster the People and Cage the Elephant. Congratulations, I guess. I ran across these videos this week that were especially fun for me as a songwriter and guitarist to get a glimpse of the process behind how Dave Grohl writes Foo Fighters songs. Enjoy. Foo Fighters start at 16:44. For a great review of the show and first hand account of what it was like to be there, check out this post: http://www.antiquiet.com/news/2011/08/foo-fighters-lollapalooza/ Hey, the Foo Fighters just released their film documenting the "Garage Tour" they did earlier this year. Check it out. White Limo 07/27/2011
I have been wanting an old car lately. I don’t know why. It just seemed, well, fun. I had a picture I took of a 1976 Oldsmobile Ninety Eight on my desktop because it was blue with a white vinyl top and rear wheel covers, just like my grandfather’s. I actually wondered if it could be the exact same car but my mom said it didn’t look exactly like it when I sent her the picture. What? In my mind it’s the exact...same...car. But she remembers with an adult mind and I’ve got foggy childhood memories. There was a 1974 Plymouth Valiant on Craigslist I wanted. But they wanted to get it running before they showed it. Um, then don’t put it on Craigslist, lady. Oh well, their loss. Actually, that car had the slant six and manual steering and brakes. Tough little thing. It would have taken effort to drive it. Something like the Olds of course has everything – power windows, brakes, a/c, steering…and a gas guzzling big block V8 if it’s the same as my Grandfather’s. I think that thing had a 455. Sheesh. And it was huge. Whereas the Plymouth would fit in one side of our garage, the Olds would not. And I wasn’t sure I wanted something that big. If I did, I thought, I’d get a Cadillac. This was before I realized I was a Lincoln man: I fell in love with a 1971 Lincoln Mark III. I test drove it. It ended up being too expensive and needing too much work. Sigh. The search continued. What does this have to do with Dave Grohl? It does. I promise. The funny thing I realized is that I didn’t want a super cool, super nice car. Everyone wants muscle cars; camaros, barracudas, chevelles, blah blah blah. That’s why they cost a fortune too. I wanted the forgotten car from the 70’s with faded paint. I pictured myself driving around in that Plymouth Valiant with an old man’s hat and a pipe clenched in my teeth. And horn rimmed glasses for some reason. Why? I don’t know. Sometimes things just come to mind. I even thought about an old pick up truck, but those are almost always rusted to pieces. And that has a whole different feeling about it anyway. But I did find a car. The perfect marriage of price and style that I was going for and THIS IS THE CAR I BOUGHT: A 1978 Chrysler New Yorker. As big a car as you can get I think and it’s not a Cadillac OR a Lincoln (although I believe I’m still a Lincoln man at heart). It’s funny how things work out. And for you fact finders I paid $1300 and put another couple hundred into it (brakes, battery, etc.). It has a 400 cubic inch V8 and gets about 10 miles per gallon. But it rides like a dream and there is just something about turning corners with a hood sticking out a mile in front of you. Oh yeah, what does this have to do with Dave Grohl? Well, consider this my tribute to the man I obviously don’t hate as much as I proclaim... Dave Grohl Stole My Video Idea 06/02/2011
So in my mind (where no one can see and I can prove nothing) I had an idea for a video for our song American Man inspired by and somewhat paying tribute to, the movie Falling Down starring Michael Douglas. A video where I would be dressed in a white, short sleeve button down shirt, black tie and horn rimmed glasses. I hadn't fully fleshed this idea out in my mind, but it would also include driving an old, American car of some sort and end by playing in a rock and roll band. Then today I watched the new Foo Fighters video for the song Walk. Watch it below. I am actually somewhat wierded out by the whole thing. My video will look like I am trying to copy the Foo Fighters. Now I really hate Dave Grohl. Tags: Foo Fighters, Music, More Music Videos Even Iwouldn''t have thought to send this message to an alien planet. Dave Grohl is theoretically an Alien anyway given his super abilities. That planet will get this message and Jor-el will be like, "Our son has done well. And apparently he is now king of a planet." He wouldn't be too far off. http://www.good.is/post/long-live-dave-grohl-the-22-best-messages-sent-to-the-new-planet/ | Welcome to the most pathetic fan site ever.Hi! Editor's Note: Before leaving a profanity laced comment full of grammar and spelling errors telling me to get a life, that I'm a loser, that Dave Grohl is a great guy and what is my problem, etc., etc, I would ask you to slow down, take a deep breath and actually read the article or if you have read it (maybe a little quickly), read it again until you are in on the joke. Then we can all be friends.
