Even Iwouldn''t have thought to send this message to an alien planet.  Dave Grohl is theoretically an Alien anyway given his super abilities.  That planet will get this message and Jor-el will be like, "Our son has done well.  And apparently he is now king of a planet."  He wouldn't be too far off.

Okay, I thought this was going to be just another late night show performance of their last single, which would be cool and worth watching.  But it's the same thing you'll see on SNL or any other show.  But no.  I pull up the clip and there they are, in black and white, the Foo Fighters text on the drum head in the same font as the Beatles when they played the exact same theater in 1964.  Nate Mendel even has the Hofner bass like Paul McCartney is famous for playing and they all have their guitars hitched up higher than normal (not slung low).  Also gone is the "rock star spread;" they are standing fairly straight up, not with their legs wide.  Fun.  Actually, reminiscent of the old Nirvana video for In Bloom, except without the irony.

Today was the day.  The day  that I was going to prove that I could beat Dave Grohl.  Today is  the day that the new Foo Fighters album came out.  And today  was the day that I was going to release my new  album, American Man, too.  There is  so much I want to say, but it's late and so let me say really quickly that technically Dave has beaten me, because  their album is available to the  public.  But all is  not  lost.

Today, all  the recording and the rough  mixes of the Brother Howe album  are done!  This is a major victory for me personally and I want to post snippets of songs and record music videos and tell you about the recording party we had and tell you what  I think of the new Foo album and what I thought of the Foo documentary  Back And Forth, which I went to see.  But I've been a bit busy with this whole album thing, so just know that either a  super  long post is coming soon or else I'll post smaller  ones and stretch it  out.

Oh, and by the way, for my email subscribers I have  a special surprise for you today.  I'll be sending  you an email in honor of Dave beating me: a parody of Breakout by Foo Fighters that I thought I'd call:

I Hate Dave Grohl.

Here is the new music video from the Foo Fighters.  Directed by Dave Grohl himself and shot on VHS tape.  This is a performance type video and not a funny one.  For that you can watch White Limo

Here's the thing.  Last night Dave & Co. drove to a fans house in their real life white limo, live on MTV, popped the video cassette into the first VCR ever made and did the whole "world premiere" thing.  You want to know what I was doing at the very same moment last night?  Probably not, I know, but I'm gonna tell you anyway because this is my blog.

I was at Disney Princess On Ice.

How very rock 'n roll.

Hey, it was for a special occasion for our daughter.  But I took consolation in the fact that Dave Grohl, being the good dad he is said to be, would have done the same.  So while I don't have any world premiere video events or television interviews for you today, enjoy the video from someone who does.

I hate that guy.

The world premiere of the Foo Fighter's first single, "Rope",  off their new album occurred yesterday at 7AM EST.  It's a bold choice for a first single; odd time signatures, breathy vocals in the verses, big catchy chorus, plus the sickest guitar solo on a Foo Fighters album yet.  Bravo, Mr. Grohl and Company, bravo.  Here's the link:

In my efforts to Beat Dave Grohl, I hereby release the first "single" off of our new album too.  Okay, it was already released on an EP, but it will be on the new album and you can hear it below.

It also is a bold choice for a first single I would like to point out.  I know, most people wouldn't choose a slow tempo, slightly depressing song inspired by the sad state of Michigan's economy as the first single to their mostly uptempo country punk album, but Brother Howe is not most people.  Nor are we most people's favorite band for that matter (editors note: there might be a connection there).

And so dear readers, without further ado, I present to you the first single off our forthcoming album:

Hard To Find

ps - I dedicate this song to Jeff Daniels, who's love of our home state inspired my brother to write an award nominated screenplay, which then inspired me to write this song.  I also would like to take this opportunity to apologize to Mr. Daniels for trying to pitch him on said screenplay on February 5th of this year.

The Foo Fighters announced yesterday that the name of their new album is...Wasting Light.

What a minute...

What is Dave Grohl trying to say to me here?  That I'm wasting my LIFE?  Doesn't he think I already know that I'm toiling my life away while he gets to live the dream version of it?  Does he have to go ahead and rub my nose in it by naming his entire album after me?  Well, I will have you know, Mr. Dave Grohl, that I am not wasting my life no matter what you say.  I guess we all realize that the hate goes two ways, though now doesn't it?

But why do I somehow, deep inside, also feel slightly honored?  And at the same time, because  of that, deeply ashamed?

Oh wait, the name of the album is Wasting Light?  What does that mean?

Aaaah, I hate Dave Grohl.

Here's a repost of the press release from Gibson.com:

Foo Fighters have named their new album. The band’s seventh studio record will be titled Wasting Light and will be available on April 12. The lead single for the new effort by Dave Grohl and company will be “Rope.” Producer Butch Vig helmed the sessions for the album, which was recorded in Grohl’s garage. The album features a mini-Nirvana reunion. Nirvana bassist Krist Novoselic guests on Wasting Light, which, of course, features former Nirvana drummer Grohl and Nevermind producer Vig.

The Foos recently released a video for album track “White Limo.”

Wasting Light tracklisting:

1. “Bridge Burning”
2. “Rope”
3. “Dear Rosemary”
4. “White Limo”
5. “Arlandria”
6. “These Days”
7. “Back & Forth”
8. “A Matter of Time”
9. “Miss the Misery”
10. “I Should Have Known”
11. “Walk”

Foo Fighters have gone and done it again, making a funny video for one of their new songs.  Interestingly enough, the first single is supposed to be a song called "Rope."  So I'm guessing that this was a quick, fun video they did for a song that probably won't be a big radio hit.  Kind of a throw out to the fans of their really hard, fast stuff.  The video is a throwback too, reminding me of watching the early days of MTV and the cheesy videos that were around.  In fact, it looks like they literally recorded this video with a camcorder direct to VHS.

Check it out here, then continue reading below.

I went around town once with a camcorder and my daughter's help  and recorded a video too.  It's not funny.  It's not a throwback.  I don't have a limo.  I have a Ford Focus.  I stink...

I hate Dave Grohl.

There’s been some news in the Foo Fighters camp over the last ten days.  They have played two surprise gigs in the Los Angeles area and they have announced the date for the album release, which is (drum roll please)... April 12, 2011 (oh, no...).  I’ve gottalotta work to do in order to catch up and release our record first.  But I AM making progress, ladies and gentlemen.  Honest to goodness progress.  In fact I finished up another song last night.  Ah, it feels good to check something off the list.  And I do plan on having something for you dear readers on or before that date.

Now, I don’t live in the Los Angeles area, so there is no way I can make or even attempt to make any of these “surprise” Foo Fighters gigs.  Dave tweets something tantalizing like, “are you guys ready?” and you know something’s coming up.  And then sure enough, way cool gig in a small club somewhere, where you could have seen the Foo Fighters for $20, up close and personal.

Oh, you couldn’t make it either?  Yeah, too bad.  Blame Dave, not me.  So, I guess we’ll have to settle for the next best thing: YouTube bootleg videos from one of the shows itself that I happened upon.  Yes, these are the new songs from the as yet untitled new album that is coming out on April 12th of this year.  So now you can hate Dave Grohl and love me.

You’re welcome.

Warning to my kids: this video would be rated R for language if the MPAA had anything to do with it.  Therefore, since we don't let you watch R rated movies at home, let's not watch R rated videos daddy posts on his website, okay?  We like Dave Grohl as a person, but we don't want to talk like him.

Okay, now that we've got that little bit of hypocrisy out of the way, let's get to it.  If you're at all interested in the behind-the-scenes stuff of Dave Grohl recording the new Foo Fighter's album, check this video out.  He gives a tour of his garage where they recorded the album (and sure enough it is a real garage - I especially like the pink little girls bike along the same wall rows of microphone and instrument cables are hung on) and talks about recording demos there and how they recorded using analog tape and how he didn't want to lose the "garagy" sound that he liked so much.  Oh, and he shows the "Foo Fighters Guitar" he's used on all the FF albums.

All in all, Dave Grohl's garage sounds like a cool place to record an album.  My garage is freezing cold and has dirty slush all over the floor.

I hate Dave Grohl.

Well, if you've always wanted to direct a Foo Fighters video here's your chance.  The Foo Fighters (and Dave Grohl) are once again trying to convince the world how cool they are by giving the opportunity to direct their new video to a fan.  Apparently there will be 11 winners (one for each song on the album?).

Notice that even a throw away song they came up with for a contest video is still catchy as all get out.  I hate that so much.
